Can I Study with APT Without a Trade Background?

If you don’t come from a mechanical or hydraulic background but you’re keen to build those skills, you might be wondering if APT is the right fit for you. The short answer? Yes, you can study with us, but it depends on your goals.

Here’s How It Works

Most of APT’s nationally recognised qualifications have entry requirements. These are usually based on previous experience in a trade, like:

  • Mechanical fitting
  • Mobile plant
  • Electricians
  • Boilermakers

If you hold these qualifications or trade backgrounds, you’re eligible to enrol and complete our Certificate III, Certificate IV, Diploma, or Advanced Diploma programs as nationally accredited qualifications.

But if you don’t hold the required trade background, you can still enrol. You’ll complete the same training, but instead of a formal qualification, you’ll receive a Certificate of Completion.

So, Can You Still Learn With Us?

Absolutely. In fact, we’ve trained students from all sorts of backgrounds who’ve gone on to thrive in hydraulics, diagnostics, and system safety. If you’re working around hydraulic gear, whether it’s on the floor, in a support role, or as part of a maintenance team, you’ll gain real value from our courses.

What’s important is that you’re in a role where you’ll be exposed to hydraulic systems, even if you’re not directly working on them yet. That exposure helps reinforce your learning with practical context.

What We Cover

From foundational knowledge to advanced troubleshooting, APT’s training includes:

  • Safety protocols
  • Hydraulic theory and components
  • System diagnostics
  • Fluid power control
  • Real-world fault finding using simulation rigs

It’s hands-on, work-ready learning built around what you’ll see and use on site.

The APT Difference

Whether you’re after formal qualifications or skills that give you a leg up, we deliver training that meets you where you are:

  • On-site
  • In the workshop
  • Or through blended online and practical sessions

Our trainers are real industry professionals who’ve been on the tools and now help others lift their capability. No fluff. No nonsense. Just skills that help you work smarter and safer.

Not Sure If You Qualify?
