How NSW Smart and Skilled Funding Can Cover Your Training Costs

If you’re living or working in New South Wales and thinking about upskilling, you may be able to get subsidised training through the NSW Government program, Smart and Skilled.

The NSW Smart and Skilled initiative is designed to support vocational training that leads to real jobs and safer worksites. It helps individuals gain the skills they need to find a job or advance their careers. At APT Specialist Hydraulics and Training, we’ve made the process simple.

What Is Smart and Skilled Funding?

Smart and Skilled is a NSW Government initiative. It offers funding for training up to and including Certificate III, and for higher-level courses (Certificate IV and above) in targeted priority areas.

What Courses at APT Are Covered?

the following courses when undertaken through an Australian Apprenticeship Arrangement. https://www.apprenticeships.gov.au/

  • AUR31220 – Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology
  • MEM40119 – Certificate IV in Engineering
  • MEM50119 – Diploma of Engineering – Advanced Trade

Who’s Eligible?

To apply for Smart and Skilled funding, you’ll need to meet the basic criteria:

  • Be aged 15 or over
  • Live or work in New South Wales
  • Not currently enrolled in high school
  • Not completing an active apprenticeship
  • Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or hold an eligible visa

Plus, you must have secure employment within the relevant industry.
Your employer must also be willing to support a formal Apprenticeship Arrangement. This means they agree to your participation in structured training and will work with an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network (AASN) provider to establish a Training Contract.

This ensures your learning is directly linked to real workplace experience—giving you a supported, structured pathway to nationally recognised qualifications.

How It Works

The NSW Government sets a fixed price for each course. If you’re eligible for full funding, the government covers 100% of the course cost. If only partially funded, you’ll pay a capped student fee and the government pays the rest.

At APT, we streamline the process:

  1. We send you a Smart and Skilled eligibility link
  2. You complete the form with your details
  3. Our team reviews your application and confirms your funding eligibility
  4. If eligible, we coordinate with your AASN provider to finalise the Training Contract

Once that’s approved, your enrolment is complete—and you’re ready to start hands-on, industry-aligned training that leads to nationally recognised qualifications.
